A Week of Fun with Bikeability

A Week of Fun with Bikeability

On the first day of Bikeability it was a bit cloudy and dark but we did it anyway. First we all went and got our bikes from round the back. I was nervous but I was sure other people were too, plus I had my friends to support me. Firstly we got to meet our instructors - Liam and Jenny. They were both very kind people. Then they taught us the ‘A,B,C,D,E’ check. ‘A’ stands for air, we all had to squeeze the tyres on the bikes. ‘B’ stands for brakes, we had to hold the brakes whilst trying to move forward. ‘C’ stands for chain. ‘D’ stands for durability. And ‘E’ stands for everything like helmets and the whole bike and high visibility jackets. Once we did that we all had to get into peddle ready - the starting position for riding bikes. Once we had all done that, we could do one push with our foot and see how far we would get. Then we had a slow race where we had to be the last one to get to the other side and if our foot touched the floor we had to stay where we were. Julie won both times and did great! After that, Liam and Jenny put down some multi-coloulord cones and made an obstacle course. Liam showed us how to do it. Once we had all done that we had to weave throughout the cones. Then they added a roundabout and a channel.

On day two out of four we got to ride on the road as a snake so we all had to be quiet and arms always on the handlebars. Once we got to the spot we did sharing position then stopping. Then sharing position into control position then back. After that we did a sharing position then a U turn. After that we all headed back towards the school. By that time I was feeling a little more confident than before.

On day number three we all went a bit further than yesterday. Then we did T junctions. We learnt who got right of way and priorities. Sometimes we had to signal to people behind us (like cars and vans) it was so much fun. After that we all walked home because someone's bike had broken down, but a very kind Y5 let her borrow his bike.

And on the very last day I was almost confident with riding my bike so we cycled down to a road near to Cows Lane. There we all went up onto a main road near a bus stop. I personally think we all did great. Then we were turning down the road and doing U turns. At the end we all cycled back and were told if we passed level two and one. I didn’t pass level 2 but most others passed level two. I think the experience was great and everybody enjoyed it. I can’t wait for the new Y5s and 6s to do it next year and I’m positive that they will enjoy it as much as we did! Now I feel much more confident compared to when I first started out.
