Mastering Mandarin in Primary at Landmark: A Journey of Language and Culture
At Landmark International School, our Mandarin lessons provide students with a dynamic and immersive learning experience tailored to different Primary year groups. Our curriculum integrates Chinese language, traditions, culture, and festivals, creating an engaging and interactive environment for students.
For younger children, learning is story-based, hands-on, and playful. We explore Mandarin through Chinese storybooks, sometimes incorporating role-play to bring the stories to life. Games and interactive activities are an essential part of the lessons, helping students reinforce vocabulary and sentence structures in a fun and engaging way. They are also introduced to Chinese characters by discovering their origins, pictographs, and evolution, using drawing, writing, and storytelling to make learning more meaningful.
For older students, the focus gradually shifts towards Chinese characters, sentence structures, and language application. They explore how characters evolved over time and develop their writing skills while strengthening their ability to form sentences and express ideas in Mandarin. Educational games and group activities are incorporated to enhance language retention and encourage collaborative learning.
Since the school follows the IB PYP curriculum, Mandarin learning is closely aligned with students’ lines of inquiry, ensuring that language acquisition is connected to their broader learning journey.
Through this approach, students at Landmark not only learn Mandarin but also develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, making language learning both authentic and enriching while ensuring that learning remains fun, interactive, and engaging.
