Our Story – Landing on Landmark

We are two working parents from different continents with a boy in senior school and a girl in junior school.  Due to an exciting new job opportunity, we were looking to move from Europe to Cambridge several years ago.  We recall being intimidated by both the amount of choice and also our lack of understanding the British school system.  We landed on Landmark realizing that it was the only school that was not trying to fit our children into a system or “a box”.  They consistently (from administration to teaching staff) listened and uniquely tailored the journey to our children.  Entering our 5th year with the school, it is apparent that they are thriving in this environment.

What makes Landmark different for us?

  • Flexibility – a tailored fit.

We have seen children start their journey a year up, a year down or a unique mix of the two (for different subjects).  The small class sizes and the flexible mindset permeates in the school’s DNA.  The school does not just do this on entry, but throughout the entire experience – each year, each term and each week.  This flexibility applies to activities, special homework tips or mother tongue intensity.  This school is all about each child reaching their full academic and social potential.  Landmark must be the most flexible and accommodating school in Cambridgeshire.

  • International – both internationally experienced and creating an international experience.

This school really knows how to embrace and adapt to a family making an international move.  The administration and teaching staff leverage their experience of different school systems.  They embrace new children and quickly help them enhance the international experience for everyone.  We have witnessed children enter and thrive from the United States, Japan, Germany, Russia, Italy and many more.  The headteacher has lived and taught in London and Zambia.  We wanted a speedy transition to English but also a school willing to support mother tongue integrated into the week.  The teachers work collaboratively to transition children seamlessly to mother tongue lessons through the week.

  • Community – a celebration of diversity and inclusion.

We often see how difficult it is for people to work in teams and understand cultural & social differences.  We view this as an amazing skill of high future value.  A graduate of Landmark will be uniquely skilled and adept at celebrating cultural differences and recognizing cognitive diversity.  Landmark provides an immediate community for the children and parents alike.  Rarely, in any type of institution, have we seen diversity and inclusion leveraged and celebrated like this.

How we make the most of our Landmark experience?

  • Join the community

Get involved.  Try Kung-Fu classes, art club, join the PTA.  If your child wants a different club, voice it and they will probably try it.

  • Leverage the flexibility on offer

If something could be further optimised, ask about it.  Work with the administration, teaching staff or parents to understand what is possible.  We try and involve our children in designing their experience.
