Robin Class Inquiry into the History of Clothing at the Fitzwilliam Museum

Robin Class Inquiry into the History of Clothing at the Fitzwilliam Museum

On an unusually warm November morning, Robin Class set out for the first of our class trips this year. We were headed for the twin delights of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology (MAA) in Cambridge.  Our unit of inquiry this term explores clothing and how it helps people to express themselves. We are also diving into the history of clothing, investigating how it has changed over time, and why people choose to wear clothing for different purposes.

The children loved seeing the range of historical clothing in Fitzwilliam. They enjoyed observing and sketching examples seen on display and in paintings.

Our fantastic guide at the MAA took us on an adventure around the globe to explore how people in extreme environments have adapted to living there and using locally sourced materials to make clothing and tools.

They wrote a recount of the day detailing their favourite experiences:

  • Yesterday Robin Class went to the Museum and we see armour and paintings and sculptures. Then Egypt and see a big horse and we went to the MAA and my favourite is teeth whale and jaguar and big big boat.

  • We saw a shoe that looked like an elf show and we saw some whale teeth necklace. We looked at some old clothes and we pretended to go to the Arctic and the rainforest and desert. We looked at some paintings of the olden days. I loved the mummies. And in the corridor they put lights it was amazing.

  • Yesterday Robin Class went to the Fitzwilliam Museum. First we went to the armoury. We saw a horse with armour on it, fun! I saw a whale tooth.

The children were real ambassadors of Landmark, and were wonderfully behaved around town. We can't wait for our next trip!
