Summer Term Newsletter 2018/2019

Dear Parents

It is difficult to believe that we are reaching the end of our third year at Landmark!  It has been another busy, exciting and enjoyable term.

We held another open morning on Friday 10th May.  This was well-attended and pupils did a great job at welcoming our visitors and showing them around the school.  It was also a great opportunity for us to make sure the school and grounds looked neat and tidy! Thank you to the PTA for their support and delicious, home-made, cakes.

The Years 5 and 6 pupils also took part in Bikeability in May.  This was great fun and very useful for the children, despite a couple of rainy days.

May was a busy month! Kingfisher and Robin Classes enjoyed a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum too. This was part of their study of ‘stories people tell’. They studied a painting and created their own story from it.

On the 23rd May Years 8 and 9 took part in the Ludi Scaenici Latin Play Competition.  As usual, we punched well above our weight as a small school, coming in with joint first place for the play and first for Westcott in the Latin speaking competition.  Congratulations to our students and to Mr Lord for preparing them so well.

At 10am on the morning of Monday 13th May 2019, we at Landmark received a highly secure delivery.  The 18kg padlocked case contained a fabulous selection of astronomical artefacts, some of which were on loan from NASA!  Students and staff alike all had the opportunity to study, observe, touch, draw and experience these samples which ranged from an excellent selection of Earth rocks, to fossils, samples of meteorite, impactites and actual Moon rock samples. The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all and has, we hope, ignited their interest in all things astronomical!

On Friday the 14th June we held a Leavers’ Prom at the Double Tree Hotel in Cambridge.  This was a wonderful evening; parents and grandparents joined the students and staff for cocktails (or mocktails) and photographs by the river and then the students and staff enjoyed a delicious three course meal at the hotel.  The students looked amazing and the beautifully decorated room provided the perfect backdrop for the meal. Afterwards Des very kindly drove the young people to an ‘after party’, hosted by the very brave Richardsons!

Tuesday the 18th June was our Year 11 Leavers service.  An opportunity to say a fond farewell to our Year 11 students.  Our Year 10s wowed us with some wonderful musical performances, and other seniors provided poems and songs,  An accurate and amusing A to Z of the leavers was presented by Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Roche. After the service the parents and students provided a delicious tea for the students and staff.  Thank you everyone for your contribution to this event.

On the 18th June, (a week later than planned due to the wet weather) Kingfisher and Robin Classes enjoyed an exciting day at Bewilderwood in Norfolk.  The children enjoyed a range of challenging and exhilarating rides and activities and came back to school tired but happy. And dry!

Sports Day took place on Wednesday 19th June.  We were incredibly lucky with the weather and the day was a great success.  The students all took part with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship and lots of parents came to support the event.  Thank you to the PTA for the delicious fruit and to David Spurdens for some amazing photos.

During the week commencing the 24th June the Year 10 pupils undertook work experience at a variety of organisations.  Thank you to those who have helped to find suitable placements for the students.

On 25th June Toucan and Eagle Classes spent the day being Romans at Stibbington Educational Centre.  They learned a lot about this topic they have been studying and looked amazing!

On Sunday the 30th June the PTA held the annual Landmark Summer Fete.  There were a great range of activities, challenges and stalls and a delicious barbecue, which was very popular. Thank you to the PTA.  We would also like to say a huge thank you to Aoife, (Mum of Jake) who has been the Chair of the PTA for the past three years.  Aoife and Jake are moving to San Diego for two years so that Andre, Jake’s Dad, can work at his company’s Head Office in San Diego To say that we will miss Aoife would be a huge understatement.  She has been a huge and well-loved supporter of Landmark and the guiding light of the PTA, which has been and is one of Landmark’s greatest assets. Come back soon, Aoife, Jake and Andre!!!

During the last week of term the Year 7, 8 and 9 classes went on a residential trip to Grafham Water.  This was an amazing experience for all the students and allowed them to take part in a range of exciting challenges and team building exercises including sailing, buggy building, raft building, low ropes, wall climbing, archery and not forgetting the famous Grafham Challenge.  Thank you to Jo for working so hard to organise this opportunity for the pupils, and to Jo, Emma and Paula for accompanying the students on the trip, as well as to Des and Mark for driving them to and from the venue.

On the 4th July we held our End of Term Assembly which was followed by the End of Term Performance by the members of the Drama Club.  Both events were well attended and most enjoyable. Thank you to the PTA for the delicious tea that followed the assembly.

We have said very fond farewells to Sebastian, Lucie, Jake, Roman, J O, Axel, Timofei and Felix.  All of these pupils have been part of the school family for a considerable amount of time and will be greatly missed. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to J O’s parents for the 96 Samsung tablets they donated, which will be a wonderful addition to the school!

We hope you agree with us that this has been a busy, challenging and rewarding year for your sons and daughters.  We are very proud of them all and are grateful to you all for your support and for entrusting us with their education.  We wish you all a very relaxing and peaceful summer holiday and look forward to welcoming you all back to Landmark in September.

With very warm regards

The Landmark Team
