An inquiry into how people´s traditions bring them together
In this blog we have a compilation of reflections on our latest line of inquiry in Robin Class, for our Unit; Traditions. The students completed the reflections after an exciting day celebrating traditional foods at a student led traditional feast.
What was the traditional feast?
We created a traditional party on Monday. Each of the students brought in a food connected to one of your personal traditions. In Robin Class, we got split into sub-committees; layout, entertainment, and decorations, and we had a week to plan in six steps: Tuning In, Finding Out, Sorting Out, Going Further, and Making Conclusions and Getting Active. We got given a budget of seven pounds to buy items we needed. We also sent out messages like sending a message to the dinner lady to ask to borrow crockery and cutlery.

All of Robin Class was at the feast we started a week before the party and everyone brought in their own food from their origin/home land. Some even brought in their own recipes passed down from their grandparents. We did it so we could understand each others´ cultures.

Why is our traditional food important?.
My food is important to me because we eat it on special occasions.
Razi
My food is important to me because it represents the apple season.
Marta
My food feels important but I don´t really eat it on special occasions

How did I develop as a learner?
I improved my planning skills because we planned the party on our own. I learned about time constrictions and I found out about how food brings people together.

I learned lots of different food names and tasty traditional foods. I also learned lots of new interesting traditions that I didn´t know about. We learned the history of the piñata and where it was invented. I think the piñata that the games group made needs a bit more layers of paper maché so it's a bit more stronger. I think I’ve improved in working in groups and listening to others.
Marta
I learned that everyone´s traditions are important to them.
Eddie
I learned about lots of traditions and how to make a piñata.
