Developing our Learner Profile
At Landmark we are starting out on our journey to becoming an International Baccalaureate school. We are currently stating the candidacy process for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and we will be working towards accreditation over the next 18 months. As part of starting out on our journey the students have been using visible thinking routines to explore the IB Learner Profile. Here is a blog by Giulia in year 6 outlining the activities that they have been doing:
Learner Profile Blog
Once a week on Friday, we have a learner profile with my wonderful teacher, Mrs Fritz. I love the learner profiles because they expand my creativity and make me see a whole new side to a subject.
Mrs Fritz organises a time in the afternoon to bring Toucan (year 4 and 5’s) and Eagle (my class, year 5 and 6’s) and gives us activities to do. She gives us a certain question and we have to do an activity. These activities are called Visible Thinking Routines. They help us with understanding more to a question
The first leaner profile question we had was ‘What does it mean to be an inquirer?’. Everyone came up with some great answers.
Our second learner profile activity was something called ‘See, Think, Wonder’. We all had to get into groups and sit at a table. On every table, there was the same picture: a sea of phones with an island sitting on them. We all had to write down what we saw, what we thought about, and what we would like to find out.
Our third learner profile activity was called ‘Chalk Talk’. Each table had a bubble with some types of communications like working together, expression and confidence. We had to go around each table and write what we thought would make up these types of communication. For example, to be confident you have to be bold and brave. To work together you have to have teamwork and positivity/optimism. Although, it was part of the rules that we had to stay quiet during this. It was nice to have silence fill the room. I thought it helped me to concentrate more on a deeper meaning to each of the words.
In summary, these learner profiles are really helpful. They help add to my knowledge and that’s why I like them so much.
