Evolution of the Landmark Library

Evolution of the Landmark Library

When Penny Roche, Head of Secondary English, approached the PTA and asked for help on the libraries, volunteers jumped straight into the task.  We began sorting books into categories and the project took off from there.

A parent generously donated two tall book cases which now house our non-fiction collection. The Giving Tree initiative allowed families to generously donate over 40 new books; we raised £400 at the December Panto to help refresh and maintain the libraries; and our LIS families have even graciously donated books from their own home libraries.  With the money raised at the Panto, the PTA was able to purchase 2 tall bookcases for the Primary’s Library along with several short bookcases for the Young Adult Fiction Library.  LIS approved a new library app which automates the cataloguing and organising of the entire school’s collection of books.  The app will provide staff and students a quick way to locate books within the school to fit their needs and lessons.

The Primary’s Library, on the main floor of our school, now houses our non-fiction collection that has been organised and labelled with the Dewey Decimal System.  It also houses Picture Books – for our youngest students; Emerging Reader Books – to assist those new to reading; Junior Fiction – young reader chapter books; Fiction Books – next level chapter books; Graphic Novels; Periodicals; DVD’s and Audio Books.  All of these are organised by the author’s last name. We currently have 2,931 books in the Primary’s Library collection and it is growing every day!

Upstairs, the Senior English room now houses our Young Adult Fiction Library – fiction for teens.  We currently have 363 books in this collection, bringing our school’s grand total for book collections to 3,294!

We have seen a dramatic increase in library use since the transformation began.  Students are excited to find their favourite authors and also try out new books to expand their reading adventures.

As we kick off World Book Day events at LIS next week, we would like to extend a massive THANK-YOU to the entire LIS community, all of our donors, our dedicated PTA team, our committed volunteers, and everyone who has supported this wonderful cause.  The LIS libraries wouldn’t be such an incredible success story without the amazing support we have received from the community, so we will remain eternally grateful!
