A Remarkable Leadership Adventure: Landmark International School Year 10 at Abbey College
What an extraordinary day it was for the Year 10 students of Landmark International School as they embarked on a leadership journey like never before! On the 23rd of November 2023, our students had the opportunity to visit Abbey College, where they delved into a day filled with inspiration, learning, and forging connections with students from around the globe.
The day kicked off with a well thought out blend of cultures, ethnicities, ages and schools as students were grouped into nine different tables. The groups had representations from countries such as Ukraine, Iran, Slovakia, China, Germany, Spain of course England. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to break the ice, and share experiences with Year 12 and 13 sixth form students. As one of the younger participants in the room, it was particularly fascinating to discover the diverse range of studies and interests that each individual brought to the table.
Following this initial socialisation, the students were treated to two captivating talks. The first looking into leadership through the lens of gender, with a specific focus on feminism. The second talk featured a young professional who had recently graduated from university, sharing valuable insights and lessons he wished he had known at our age.
The learning continued with a few inspiring presentations from students, each showcasing their personal journeys and insights into leadership. The talk of the day came from a Cambridge University student deeply involved in climate activism, who had been invited to participate at the upcoming COP 28. The passion and commitment displayed during all of these talks left an indelible mark on all present, particularly highlighting the power of leadership in encouraging positive change.
Lunchtime was not only a feast for the senses but also an opportunity for further bonding. Students enjoyed a delicious variety of meals while engaging in meaningful conversations, and even took the chance to unwind outdoors. The sense of friendship, even amongst those who had never met before, and the joy of making new connections added an extra layer of positivity to the day.
The afternoon session brought an exciting challenge for each table; to collaborate on creating a presentation on what defines a strong leader and how these qualities can be identified and developed within a school environment. It was heartening to witness and be a part of the enthusiasm and creativity that all students poured into this task. Two Landmark International School students even advanced to the finals, and one emerged as the winner, alongside their exceptional group.
As the day concluded, it was impossible not to reflect on the impact of the experience. It is hard to express the gratitude we hold for the opportunity provided by Abbey College, the organisers of this enriching event. Special acknowledgements must also go to our Headteacher, Mr. Turnbull-Jones, whose vision and commitment to student development made this day possible and the Principal of Abbey College, Dr Elena Hesse, also deserves praise for hosting such a seamless and impactful event.
In conclusion, the Landmark International School Year 10 Leadership Experience at Abbey College was not just an experience but a celebration of diversity, the journey through finding the leader in you and a tribute to the potential each student has. As we move to thrive in our GCSEs, we carry with us the lessons learned, the friendships made, and the inspiration to be the future.
