Engineering and Mathematics Regional and National Success for Landmark Students

Engineering and Mathematics Regional and National Success for Landmark Students

If you were an engineer what would you do? - Primary Engineer Competition by Anglia Ruskin University for the East of England Region

Our Year 7 and 8 classes have also been busy with a different engineering challenge.  Their task was to look into the roles of different engineers in society and to then design a solution to a problem they had identified.  Designs included an electrostatic device to remove cat hair from the home; a portable water wheel that can be put down a plug hole to generate electricity to charge a battery; devices to make medical treatments more comfortable and less stressful; and a jacket to protect vulnerable people when they fall.

Entries were submitted, each with a hand-written letter to an engineer to explain the reasons for their design.  The judging panel was composed of engineers who awarded all our students certificates ranging from Pass to Distinction and Distinction Shortlisted.

Those students awarded a Distinction (Giulia, Jake, Kyra, Vivian and Oliver) and Distinction Shortlisted (Charlie)  will have their work displayed at the final exhibition in Chelmsford on June 22nd.  In addition, Florian Ward was a winner in the Year 8 category and has been invited to the awards ceremony on the same date.

A huge congratulations to our STEM students for their achievements this year.  It is such a privilege to oversee these lessons where the students develop a wide range of transferable skills to complete their projects.

UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge Success

At the beginning of the summer term, 18 students from Years 6 to 8 participated in the Junior Maths Challenge. This UK maths competition is specifically designed to encourage fluency in using mathematical techniques, applying reasoning skills and developing mathematical thinking to solve short interesting problems. We were delighted that more students wished to participate this year than in previous years and we recently received very pleasing results. All students received participant certificates and those who did particularly well were awarded either bronze, silver or gold certificates. The following students received these awards:

Bronze

  • Turner Year 6

  • Ted Year 6

  • Jake Y7

  • Clarence Year 7

Silver

  • Henry Year 7

Gold

  • Ben Year 6

  • Andrew Year 8

  • Elijah Year 8

  • Florian Year 8

  • Bernard Year 8

Junior Kangaroo Challenge

In addition to the students receiving their gold certificates, three of the four Year 8 students who each achieved a mark ranking them in the top 6% of all participants, have automatically been invited to compete in the next level of the competition called Junior Kangaroo. We wish Andrew, Elijah and Bernard the very best of luck in this follow on round of the Junior Maths Challenge.
