Robin Class Inquire Into How the World Works!

This term in Robin Class, the Year 2 and 3 students have been set a series of tasks from none other than Professor Granite, Head of Geology at the University of Cambridge! They have had to use all their inquiring and thinking skills to help them find out lots of facts about the structure of the Earth, the types of rocks in our world, and how fossils are formed. We have had so much fun learning through investigating actual rocks and fossils, visits to experts at the Sedgwick Museum and conducting some independent research.

What have you enjoyed the most about this unit?

“I enjoyed making all the clay models and going to the museum. I liked the clay models because I had experience of building something new.” Ottilie

“I liked using clay because I could really feel how to mould it. I made a volcano rising out of the sea because over time the sea got lower and pushed up the volcano.” Elodie

“I enjoyed making a giant ammonite, a magnifying glass and hammer using clay. I liked this because I learned about how to shape it and bring it together. It was nice to feel the clay.“ Soren

“I liked making patterns, volcanoes and ammonites with the clay. I had to be careful because you might squish it together.” Ron

What skills have you used to find out about rocks and fossils?

“I used my research skills to find out about fossils and rocks on my laptop.” Myros

“Lots of research because I had to research about sedimentary rock. Definitely thinking skills because we had to think about how fossils are formed.” Ottilie

“I used my research skills and thinking skills. We were researching about dinosaurs and how big they were, what they ate.” Elodie

“I used research because I asked questions and found things out about Megalodon.” Joshua

“I used my research skills all the time. I found out about sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock.”  Robert

How will this understanding help you in the future?

“When I want to find fossils, I will know which place to go.” Myros

“It will help me because I will know how to use a laptop to research things.” Joshua

“To learn about all sorts of stuff when I need.” Soren
”It will help me to learn.“ Ron
